Private lessons are one of the most important investments in music that a student or parent can make. They often provide the expert instruction necessary to succeed and excel. Many of our best students would not be where they are today without them. The high quality private teachers that we have are one of the assets that make our band the quality organization that it is. Private lessons are highly recommended for every band student.
The following is list of criteria that you should expect from your private lesson teacher:
We know that many of you are already doing many of the things we have mentioned above with your private teacher. We simply want to advise you on what to expect from a good private lesson teacher. If you have any questions and/or concerns we would be glad to discuss them with you.
The following is list of criteria that you should expect from your private lesson teacher:
- Help with band music – especially the problem spots
- Modeling of correct instrument techniques: good example of tone, correct playing position, good embouchure
- Advice concerning equipment – reeds, mouthpieces, sticks, mallets, step-up instruments
- Sequential procedures for warming up and warming down.
- Listening skills concerning correct pitch and good intonation
- Technical aspects of playing – correct rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, breathing and articulation
- Working beyond what is on the paper – how to practice and what to practice
- Sight-reading of duets or other method books
- Challenging pieces beyond the band repertoire
